Frequently Asked Questions

about Chaplaincy Services

What is a Chaplain?

A chaplain is focused on ‘being there' for you when you need someone to listen to you and support you as opposed to telling you what needs to be done. Chaplains are spiritual and pastoral counselors who work with patients and families to access spiritual strength and resources from a faith-based perspective. Chaplains offer care and support when individuals or families search for clarity, guidance & meaning in the midst of life's struggles & tribulations. However a chaplain is different from a clinical counselor who interviews clients to assess their mental health and behavioral problems. A chaplain can refer you to a clinical professional if need be..

What's the difference between an Imam & a chaplain?

A chaplain is trained to provide religious, spiritual, and emotional support without judgement. Unlike imams, a chaplain may be male or female. Many chaplains who are trained in the field of chaplaincy will be able to provide one with the Islamic perspective on different spiritual or religious question. A chaplain does not tell you what you need to do but is there for you when you need someone by your side.

Where do chaplains work?

You can find chaplains of all faiths serving in many places: schools, universities, hospitals, correctional facilities, police departments and many other institutions.

Why speak to a professional rather than a friend?

A professional has training & experience before working with clients. Our services are completely confidential by law, and all communication is protected by HIPAA regulations. You never have to worry about others “knowing my business.” If your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

What’s the difference between talking to a coach or chaplain at Ruh - or my best friend, or family?

The key difference between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A professional, coach, or therapist can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to find answers within yourself.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for coaching and chaplaincy, it will be different for each individual.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication prescribed by a licensed doctor can be effective however it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with Coaching & Chaplaincy. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time it can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek support in the first place.

I want to get the most out of my sessions. What can I do to help?

We're so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
